Our vintage embroidery collection is made from vintage huipiles from Guatemala. The huipil, or the top/torso portion of the top or dress worn by the Mayan people of Guatemala as an expression of their ethnic identity, are marvelous labor-intensive pieces of art with vibrant colors and intricate embroideries. They are handcrafted using traditional techniques, methods, and color schemes representing a legacy of craftsmanship, visual history, symbolism, and storytelling passed down through generations matrilineally. Common motifs range from animals, human figures, celestial bodies, to gods; a personal narrative to the artisan.
Made from 100% cotton embroidery applied to 100% cotton front panels. Back with a mix of traditionally manufactured stripes or a vibrant solid color complimenting the front, or 100% cotton canvas and 100% cotton velvet.
